This is nothing out-of-the-ordinary. They stayed for the normal amount of time. Another flight will be there soon.

lol......as god is my witness...i though dropsondes could fly...

so "last report" was just that recon? i thought so....they keep going in right up to landfall.

Yes, they insert LAST REPORT at the end of that specific mission's flight.

Yes the aircraft can take measurements itself. They normally just extrapolate the surface conditions from the flight level.

As, recon also does missions during the winter of storms over the north.

There's really no need to do a recon if a storm is over land, especially in the US where there are plenty of observing stations along the coast.
