Star shape in Ivan's eye

Animate the visible satellite view at this link and see if you see the star shape in Ivan's eye. Any meteorological explanations?

There just happen to be 5 equally spaced mesovortices. 5 corners make the shape of a star...pretty amazing. Other than that I don't really know exactly how or why these vortices form.

Its spectacular. It feels so odd to be admiring the beauty of this hurricane, and at the same time fearing the consequences to come for those who remained.

PurdueWx80, have you seen a phenomenon like this before in other hurricanes?

I wouldn't be so quick to call them mesovorticies. It really is hard to tell--might simply be scattered cloud cover. They were much more distinct in Isabel.

Isabel was also Annular... there was more *room* to be distinct.

Not really. Her eye was also 35-30nm

usually this occurs in Cat 5 hurricanes :eek:
