Pre-Landfall Intensification Phenomenon

#1 Postby adelphi_sky » Wed Sep 15, 2004 1:48 pm

Just wondering if anyone has data on the ratio of hurricanes intensifying just before landfall to those that weaken just before landfall. Time of day, time of season, terrain, etc. It seems we have had a number of storms rapidly intensify before landfall. Alex, Gaston, Charley, and now Ivan (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on these. I can't remember if Frances intensified or weakened.

KWT - I have not read that anywhere but I will agree she did intensify a little bit before landfall which I attribute to crossing the gulfstream at such a painstakingly slow pace.

If I remember, I think he was still slowly werakening when he made landfall, if not maintaining.

I think Frances got better organized as it was making landfall...it defnitely maintained or marginally increased in strength, but it got better organized.
