What the local Gulf Coast newscasters are saying

#1 Postby yzerfan » Wed Sep 15, 2004 11:20 am

I'm on the far east of the Pensacola/Mobile tv area. Will post on and off as long as we have power. (Which is hopefully for a while since my burblet is all underground utilities)

Coast road between Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach is already heavily damaged from overwash. No surprise since the high point of the road is maybe 5 feet above sea level.

US 98 between Destin and Ft. Walton Beach is closed because of overwash. Again no surprise since part of that road is maybe 3 feet above Choctawhatchee Bay.

Many of the bridges are now closed to traffic. 331 bridge was closing earlier this morning. Lillian Bridge was supposed to be closed but the wind hasn't picked up yet, and traffic was pretty heavy, so they're monitoring the bridge and passing out free ice to motorists going by. (Florabama Lounge had much extra and figured they were going to lose power) Mid Bay Bridge is still open and we can hear a lot of traffic heading north on White Point Road.

Water has been cut off to the barrier islands for Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key. Only people allowed there now are the newsies.

Shelters at Pensacola Civic Center, special needs at Pensacola Junior College, and University of West Florida are at capacity. If you need transportation to a shelter, you're supposed to call now for a ride.

Projections for the Shoal, Yellow, and Blackwater River surge are all running 12 feet above flood stage. Expect flooding over SR 85 between Niceville and Crestview later today and tonight.

City of Ft. Walton Beach is turning off water to customers south of US 98 later on today.

Thank you so much for this information! I have personal interest in the Ft. Walton Beach area and I've been absolutely ill all morning out of concern.
Please stay safe and keep the updates coming.

If we were in Destin, well we wouldn't be in Destin right now. North Bay's got enough elevation in spots we can board up and hunker down. Moderate rain/moderate wind at my house right now.

City of Ft. Walton Beach is turning off water in all areas at 7:00 pm tonight. No word on the county system.

Pensacola Beach camera is on right now. Quietwater Beach pier/docks on the sound side is basically totally submerged, as are some docks in the Sabine area. Gulf side, it looks like the waves are higher than the Pensacola Beach pier. It's eerie seeing absolutely no activity on Bob Sikes bridge.

3 just got a couple coastal reports in. Storm surge/erosion is looking worse than Opal did at this stage in the game. Pensacola Beach has breach/overwash at Ft. Pickens, Five Flags Inn, Avienda 14/17, and Gulf Islands east of Portofino condos. Gulf Islands beach parking lots near Portofino are covered in sand/surf. Conditions similar in Navarre Beach.

Garcon Point bridge is closing to southbound traffic- northbound off the Gulf Breeze peninsula still allowed until the winds pick up more. Three mile bridge reportedly closing as well.

One reporter said there were several v. nice muscle cars left behind on roads on Pensacola Beach. Speculation was that hopes of insurance claims were involved.

They're showing the P. beach pier cam again. Some waves starting to crash over that pier. I suspect Navarre Beach pier is going to take some heavy damage as well.

Over to CBS out of Mobile. Reporter on Alabama point off of 193 south just north of Dauphin Island. conditions continue to deteriorate. DI evacuation was considered to be Complete and successful. Waves are now reportedly going over the DI causeway.

Interstate news- Bankhead tunnel is closed. I-65 is one way from Stockton to Montgomery. Curfews are in place from parts of Baldwin county to parts of Mississippi. Mobile Bay causeway is expected to have water going over it.

Cops may not be able to respond to calls in Mobile during the peak of the storm. Many shelters are at capacity. Others are now opening.

ABC out of PCB is broadcasting emergency info. Cape San Blas in the big bend is going to turn into an island. Houses are going into the water, probsbly 30-40 of them. (fortunately no one really lives there) Water is going over the rocks at the 'elbow' of the peninsula and CR-30E is just about underwater, in real trouble and probably toast.

PC proper, problems are storm surge flooding but not too bad yet. Cape San Blas is just so flat and erosion prone.

Navarre Beach pier reportedly has lost several sections to it/ is collapsing. Also the main road down Navarre Beach is supposed to be compromised. (ch 3)

US 98 between Destin and FWB is now intermittently open again. (I guess wash from Choctaw Bay must have gone down) However it may be closed again at any time.

From the Pensacola News Journal:

"Shelters at the Pensacola Civic Center and the University of West Florida have been closed because they have reached capacity. The county’s special needs shelter at Pensacola Junior College also is full. Officials at the Civic Center have been moving refugees around the facility -- first away from floor-level to avoid flooding, and around noon, away from areas where the roof could collapse. People are now being placed in arena offices and other similar locations."

I don't get using the civic center as a shelter either. Too low of an elevation.

Yeah, definitely a stupid place for a shelter. Unless a direct hit, everyone at the civic center should survive fine, but all there cars will be useless afterwards from sitting in water.

West Mobile here, near Cottage Hill and Dawes Rd., we are going to be in the eastern eyewall. Everyone here is boarded up and hunkered down. Gonna be a miserable night, bringin back memories of Frederic and Camille. History is about to be rewritten for Mobile. Good luck to all and hope to be back online in a couple of weeks, maybe. :(
