#1 Postby Terry » Tue Sep 14, 2004 10:45 pm

"Jes" from Mobile Bay area had posted earlier that she wouldn't evacuate becaue she has pets. Several of us responded with suggestions on the pets and recommenations to get the heck out of dodge. Wondering if anyone knows or has heard from Jes...?? Hope she has headed to the hills with pet in tow !!!

I don't know about Jes but I can report that there was quite a contigent of pets (and their owners) at the rest areas on I-65 headed north out of Mobile today. It seemed like everyone had a dog. So, there has to be some hotels/motels that are taking them.

The "pillowcase idea" for transporting kitties and small animals when normal carriers are not available is one of the best things I've heard on this board. Cardboard boxes DO NOT WORK.

Therefore, along with Valium, my next year's hurricane kit will contain several pillow cases - standard, queen, and king!

I totally agree although it did sound funny when first mentioned, and it seems sound. I'm a dog person myself and know Straw would bite my hand off if I tried that.

The pillowcase idea also depends on the animals involved. My mellow cat wouldn't mind. The skittish one would freak, and when the adrenaline kicks in, he's more than capable of tearing his way out of fabric like that.

Channel 3 out of Pensacola is doing an extended newscast with call-ins. One guy just suggested spray painting your phone number on your horse in case he/she got loose.

I'm still here. Don't worry I'm not in an area of Mobile that was evacuated-- I'm very high and I live in a brick house. Boarded all windows today. I just could not take the cats. One is wild and has a nervous breakdown everytime the doorbell rings. The second is 19 years old and frail. The third is young and healthy. They do not travel well because they never had to go to the vet's office until 2 years ago. My husband was a vet (but died of cancer quickly 2 yrs ago) so the cats received home treatment most of their lives. I just couldn't put them through the stress of such a long trip. Thanks for thinking about me. I'll let you know how everything turns out when this nightmare is over.
