Wake up north Gulf Coast - earlier landfall possible

#1 Postby Terry » Tue Sep 14, 2004 10:01 pm

Mentioned on other sites and on Viper (Channel 8, WFLA Tampa) --- faster speed and therefore earlier landfall. (and I'd guess that this means a more westerly landfall, but don't hold me to that. Listen to your local mets and emergency folks!)

Get the heck outta Ivan's way. Moan later!

Just because it is moving faster now doesn't mean it won't slow down earlier than the NHC thinks. A stalling storm just off the coast would be a nightmare (one that we just experienced w/ Frances).

I think it's looking like it may go to Pascagoula...I'm feeling much, much better after the 11:00 track came out from the NHC. It appears that New Orleans has dodged another bullet and our record for a landfall since 1965 will hold. I sincerely hope and pray for those to our East that this storm will weaken before it makes landfall. I believe that it will---maybe to a category 3. Godspeed!

I think N.O. has had several landfalls since Betsy. I guess you must mean
a major hurricane, right?

Man, this is confusing. Just got through watching the local Fox station here. They are breathing a little sigh of relief because of the NHC shifing the track east. The track they showed had it going right over Mobile. Now, I know this is a big hurricane, but landfall right over Mobile would be great news for N.O. But, I don't want to wish this upon our neighbors in Mobile either. This is shaping up to be a horrible trend for Mobile. At least that's what I was lead to believe by the latest news here. Who knows?

If this is a major storm by landfall, given the size of the storm, I don't see NO being off the hook necessarily. Perhaps not the gloom and doom worse case scenareo everyone has been referring too, but it ani't gonna be a walk in the park in area either. Just stay safe and vigilant.

Also, I get real nervous when folk start saying it's gonna hit X city. Any kind of drifting close in and it can be someplace else in a heartbeat. The only good sceanaro is that this thing dies at sea, and I don't guess there's a chance in he!! that's happening. Just keep sharp and be ready to make other plans; at least 3 of you guys are in prime strike areas ~~ my guess is that one of you guys are going to get the hit...

Don't let your guard down, because IMHO, a faster track is bad news for MS and LA.

Agreed, PurdueWx80 - stalling storm off coast is a nightmare. Just ask those in the Bahamas re Frances. And a faster moving storm (regardless of the intensisty) ican cause a mess since it catches people off guard.

We need hurricanes that only follow predictable tracks and intensity forecasts. But then life would be boring and we wouldn't need Storm2K!

A faster track means more W and less if any recurve E.If acceleration is being experience then stronger ridge to the E is to blame. At least that is the way I see it might be totally off base.
