Yes, but I heard they were quite shallow. However this is where Lili bombed, was it not?

Yes, it is where she bombed, although a bit further west than where Ivan is now. Much of the warm water is shallow-ish, but there is a VERY deep warm pocket in the general vicinity that Ivan is headed. That's where upwelling would have the least chance of hindering development. Ivan is also moving at a decent enough clip (so far) that the shallow water doesn't matter too much.

don't forget lilli bombed because Isidore came in a week before and stirred up the water. it was not nearly this warm with lilli and it was in oct.

By bombed we mean got much stronger. Also, it has basically been proven that cool water isn't what stopped Lili's development. It was more likely a combo of shear and dry air (and only slightly from "cool" water...Isidore was very weak at that point).

It isn't particularly reassuring that the colors chosen for this graphic look like peering into the mouth of a volcano.

Warm waters from an eddy tend to run deep

Those SST's are hotter than where Ivan was category 5! Something like 88*+!

Lili may have bombed at landfall, but she gave us one heck of a punch. She had a slight burst of energy a couple of miles inland. One could tell that was the case by looking at the path of damage.

Bombed means rapidly intensified. Sounded like you meant the opposite Breeze?

Speaking of Gulf of Mexico volcanoes...

Let's hope these don't erupt

Remember.... there was a 6.0 earthquake near Ivan's path
on Thursday !

Quote:

"The researchers surmise that such asphalt volcanoes only occur in the Gulf of Mexico, but that they are abundant there, because the conditions required for their formation — deep water, salt diapirs below the seafloor, and the presence of oil deposits — are found only here."

Yep, sorry my mistake gkrangers. Lili did drop from Cat. 4 to Cat. 2 at landfall. Still very strong and destructive though.

It's hard for me to imagine that hurricanes could trigger volcanoes. Submarines have noticed no effects from one when submerged a few hundred feet below a hurricane.<P>Then again, I've never been on a submarine unless you count the one at Disneyland.

I'll bet there is one down there and it is an American. Maybe a Brit is allowed nearby as well.

Russian? Nah. They hardly leave the yards anymore.

Chinese? Too busy dropping off illegal aliens on the West Coast.

Iranian? Didn't they lose one under a supertanker recently?

GEEZ! Where did this come from? I missed it.

Only thing left to verify is the 170Kts at landfall.

Wow.
