There were under 800 lightnings strikes across the United States and Ontario, Canada during one of the two hour periods on Friday, when there was severe weather occurring in Indiana and Michigan (Severe Thunderstorm Watches and a few warnings were issued) as many of you I am sure were aware.

The current lightning detection network is owned by Vaisala Inc. Since this is a private sector company, we're lucky to get any free lightning data at all. Although they collect the data every 5 minutes (I believe), it's only available at 30 minute intervals over the internet (for free). Vaisala also puts restrictions on outside companies that use their lightning data and displays it on the internet (limited to 30 minute updates). The Weather Channel used to display strike data on their regional satellite maps, but has since stopped (I've heard they didn't include internet delivery in a contract renewal at the end of January).
