A Hurricane Trivia Question for you

#1 Postby WaryEye » Mon Sep 13, 2004 5:40 pm

Can someone please tell me what the third Cat 5 hurricane was that hit the U.S in the last 100 years? I just heard on TWC that there were 3.. he mentioned Camille and Andrew which I already knew but what was the third one and in what year did it arrive?

Thanks

I believe that would be the labor day storm of 1935 to hit Florida.

thats correct..hit the keys, killed 400. i have actually been to the monument they have setup on my way to key west. i suggest you stop and look at it on the way down because generally after a few days at key west you are in no condition to do anything except get home and get into bed and sleep it off.

No name on the labor day storm, I believe they started naming them around 1950, though they were mostly girl names. Then in 1970, they started alternating back and forth. Yea this is amazing how active this season is. Sure every season has a couple majors, but almost all of these are fish, or they weaken significantly before landfall. The fact that we have had this many majors, all threatening land is indeed nothing short of amazing. Something interesting is that since 1980, tropical activity has been on the rise, with dozens of significant strong storms. Perhaps this is evidence that some global climate change is underway. Scary. :(

Thanks for that link, Ed. You know I have to say that Ivan's pressure is creeping me out. Based on those facts, he is the third strongest in history.
