ICE PROBLEMS

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Thu Apr 03, 2003 10:13 pm

Problem #1 is definitely definitely the ice storm that is developing now over lower Michigan. An ice storm warning is in effect for big rapids, Michigan, as well as Mount Pleasant where 1/2-1 inch of ice is expected with thunder and lightning mixed in with the freezing rain overnight tonight. Eastern Wisconsin is in this threat too.

The setup is what is known is overrunning where warming air aloft overrides the colder air at the surface. In this case the sub freezing layr is very shallow near the surface. Thus the rain is hitting the ground and freezing on contact. Same problem can be said for new england late tomorrow into saturday from worchester to manchester, concord, and burlington where liquid amounts over 1 inch could mean 1 inch plus of ice. that could be devastating..

Also watch out in the UP and upper lower michigan where snow and wind gusts to 50 mph could creat near whiteout conditions later tonight into tomorow am.

Severe weather topic is next!!!

Ice Problems...Ice Problems! That's only the beginning!

I scrapped off 1" of Ice off my car!!! In order to walk on the sidewalks, you need metal cleets and hopefully, they'll grip the ice.

Dang that's alot of ice. Could the forecast be underestimating for michigan?

That would be really bad.

thankfully, the salt trucks have been out since mid morning. Unfortunately, due to the 30+ mph winds, power outages were reported all throughout the Fox River Valley. Some 30,000 residents are without power at this very moment.

Yikes, getting into early Spring and an ice storm expected to cause quite a few problems where it hasn't started precipitating yet. Even for south-central New England... ice storms in early April are rare, considering.

I had to scrape off 1/2" of Ice this morning. Roads continue to worsen, ice continues to accumulate. Trees and Shrubs are covered with ATLEAST 2" of ice.
