Look at this:

Now, historically, have other hurricanes been this large?

Not as strong, but Floyd took the cake.

Image

Hurricane force winds 115miles from the center. Not bad.

^^^ Image was broken, but if that was the same as Floyd so I'm guessing that's who it was.

At their peak size, Gilbert, Floyd and Frances were all bigger than Ivan at this point.

Carla 1961 and the Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944 were even larger than Gilbert and Floyd-both of them would have made decent sized typhoons in WPAC.

Isabel when it was hitting North Carolina as a Cat 2 last year was about the size of Ivan. Of course, dry air has been entrained into it's inner core so right by the eye wasn't as bad as farther away...

I remember Opal in 1995 being huge. I can remember it being cloudy about 36 hours before it hit us.

Also... after Isidore in 2002's inner core collapsed due to hitting the Yucatan it was HUGE with TS force winds extending out 345 miles at one point. I remember it being 18 hours from hitting Louisiana and we were getting heavy rain and gusty wind from it IN EAST ALABAMA.

In 1995, Category 4 Hurricane Luis had hurrican force winds extending outward 140 miles from the center when it was nearing the NE Carribean.
