NHC Track back east, right over my head..........

#1 Postby Dean4Storms » Mon Sep 13, 2004 10:29 am

They have also increased the winds at landfall to near 140mph. Everyone in the Panhandle should rush to completion their hurricane preparedness. Trim trees, board up windows, remove any loose items from outside, e.t.c.... Key west approx. 350 miles to the NE is already having sustained winds of 40mph with gusts upwards to near 50mph. Needless to say that trying to handle plywood sheets in these kinds of winds tomorrow may be near impossible as the pressure gradient over us tightens up.

Dean, if it is fairly certain get busy man. Don't mess with this one.

Having just gone through Charley I found that trees that had been greatly trimmed-back recently before the storm faired the best and didn't fall. Probably too late for most, but if for some reason you can manage it really trim down large-crown trees upwind from your house.

First band just hit us with gusty downpours!

Yes, try to go at least 100 miles inland. I get hit in Kissimmee from Charley with 105 mph winds. That is doable. I would go at least 100 miles inland if it's coming your way.

Gulf, I live 30 miles inland (in NE FL) and thought I was safe from storm surge from an approaching hurricane. My husband found a storm surge map on http://www.floridadisaster.org that actually showed our neighborhood being in a surge area for a Cat 4 or 5 storm! I was amazed! So I guess my advice is to check out your local evacuation maps - and see if you can get the storm surge information for your area - I didn't think about all of the inland rivers and streams - and that is what would get us.

I went to all the relailers yesterday in the area.
No generators to be had.

I was in Walmart at 6am this morning... all the
water, bread, charcole, gascans, batteries were
already gone. (i have full supplies of all)...

It's going downhill fast. God help all the unprepared.

Unprepared deifined as individuals watching the
TWC all weekend and being told over and over
and over again that this thing is going to hit Fl.

We did get a very good look at that late afternoon
thunderstorm that came in north of Tampa...

Watch to see if Ivan (eye) crosses 85 Longitude. If it doesnt soon Tampa might start thinking evac.

I'm here in Ft. Walton Beach and i'm really nervous now. Our local weather channel 3 out of Pensacola mentioned a cat3 at landfall. I'e never been or experienced a cat 4 or 5 storm.

Huh?

Unless Ivan does some pretty quick sharp turning, the only evacs I think we'll see in Tampa are voluntary for the lowest A flood zones.

What do you mean, I am confused... are you saying that Tampa officials still feel like there is a threat of significant surge in the bay? The only way I see that happening is if Ivan tracks to the far east of the NHC's cone of terror ;)

I would be nervous too... and getting ready to leave. Opal was just a Weak Cat 3 and she devastated Fort Walton Beach back in 1995.

i can vouch for the breezy conditions. I just took down a few more shutters and they arent easy to handle in the breeze. dont kill yourself trying to scrambel to prepare..take two days and stay healthy.

Nate, please understand that people are going to post stuff like that with little concern for the panic reaciton it might cause.
Right now, we in West Central Fla will get some rain bands and gusty winds but the local officials will be telling you if things change.
Be prepared to move if necessary but I think Ivan has his sites set on the panhandle.

Take care over there---I'm quite sure it will hit the panhandle of Florida at this point. New Orleans has dodged a bullet, IMO, again!!
