This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Two Important Things....

#1 Postby NateFLA » Sat Sep 11, 2004 11:06 pm

Ok, well, one important thing, and one pick-me-up.

Today I was out boating and went to eggmont key and what not, but that is not what is important. What is important is as I raced back home in the 34' Venture, I noticed the tops of EVERY thunderstorm in view/on the horizion were completely sheard off from the west to east. I don't know if that means whetever is driving the shear is strong across the whole gulf or if it has moved east and is passing over state. I also don't know if it will push the storm this direction when it gets into the gulf, that is where I need a more experienced met to advise. I will say, however, that with all the technology, sats, etc, I am a firm believer in stepping outside and actually observing the weather firsthand.

Secondly, I think we all need a little break, and I was of course cranking music and rooting around for new info/changes on bad 'ole Ivan, and Propellerheads - History repeating came on... if nothing else, the first verse is incredibly applicable to this season!

I know what you mean Nate, I spent some time out at the beach today just looking out across the Gulf and at the clouds.

Definately a different view of storm preparation.

You were seeing the W-E flow on the north side of the mid/upper ridge that is located to the N and NW of Ivan. This ridge has kept Ivan on the slow W-WNW motion over the last 24-36 hours.

What You Are

seeing is the shear that's supposed to weaken Ivan as it travels across the eastern Gulf towards the FL Panhandle. The shearing current is high level and the deep Mean Layer steering flow is not from the same direction so at this point in time it wouldn't indicate a turn of the storm to the east.

I saw that shearing on my live observation last night as well. Big shear-off on the higher convection tops west to east.

I wish I could teleport people down here and show them the clouds here for the last few days. Whenever there is tropical activity nearby certain types of clouds start showing up. The sure sign are what I call "line-clouds". They are linear bottomed clouds that form in long band-like formations. Next are the little puffy cotton ball cumulus that move in the same circulation as the storm at the low level. You can see a dark flat bottom to these clouds that sits at a precise level.

We've had these clouds going for the last few days. I'm sure the indians knew how to read them...
