I would just like to add, before I goto bed, the NWS here in Taunton massachusetts tells an important tale - the GFS has been undergoing more convective feedback issues for the next shortwave trough, overdeveloping, and perhaps seriously underdeveloping ridging here in new england.

There is a fair amount of energy dropping south into the southeastern states. The trough itself looks like it is orienting west to east along the gulf coast. Could mean that most of the shear will be experienced later in the track before landfall.
The BAM* models take the storm on a track that would guarantee some shear but If Ivan tacos early and heads for Cedar key it would be a nightmare.
