i would like to know what kind of instrument they used. Having been to jamaica i doubt they had anything to sophisticated in the country let alone the mountains. The mets take things so seriousley there they threatened to strike earlier in the week. I find this report rather dubious at best.

It is very possible that a 155mph storm that has to compress its north half windfield in order to get by the mountains would create a large-scale wind tunnel effect that could very easily produce a gust of 185mph. What you have is the entire rest of the circulation coming up from behind and pushing this compressed section past the mountains. I have no doubt 200mph gusts occurred along the mountainsides above...
