FL man attempts to fly 747 into Ivan to reduce its strength

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A South Florida businessman says he's going to try to reduce the strength of Hurricane Ivan by flying a Boeing 747 into the edge of the hurricane and dumping thousands of pounds of an absorbent material into the storm.

Peter Cordani of Jupiter plans to try to knock the storm down by one or two categories by dropping tons of powder that absorbs 3,000 to 4,000 times its weight.

Cordani is chief operating officer of Dyn-O-Mat, a company that sells environmental absorbent products such as mats for mechanics. He believes his product, SK 1,000, would cause a shearing action and a 15 degree cooling of the storm.

I was wondering why Lili went from a Cat 4 to 2 before landfall, was it really Isidore cooling the gulf?

I was talking to some guys at school the other day and we were wondering if there was anything that could be done to "freeze" a Hurricane.

This would be huge if it worked.

Don't give this fool air time! What a joke! In plus there is already a thread about it.

You dont mess with Mother Nature. You let her run her course no matter what it may be. My Opinion.

Quakery or History in the making.... it is interesting. Could you just imagine if this works, we would have a way to calm down the fury of Mother Nature. And the next question, at what long term effect would dumping all this stuff have on the enviroment?

Weather and Hurricanes is a way for the earth to release its energy. We shouldn't mess with it.

I agree with all of you. Mother Nature should be left alone for all we know it may strengthen this Hurricane to 300mph and then he going to get shot for doing it and plus it will not just completely make this thing go away.

The EPA should stop him!

I can see it now... instead of rain.. people will be pelted with gobs of goo... lol

That can't be healthy for the enviroment no matter what.

At GoPBI, some joker kept talking about this stuff and that he worked with the company or something and would always post about their "experiments" and whenever they would try and do this. I remember reading a news report that this stuff actually may increase a storm rather than decrease it. They also brought up the environmental concerns about it's residues and the mess that it would cause to use enough to do so something to a hurricane...like it would take over 16000 tons of stuff to really do any damage to the storm and the fact that that would be totally impossible to accomplish wihtout hundreds of sorties. Its a great concept, but not realistic.
Plus, just cuz we can do it...should we????

Hurricanes are apart of this Planet. They are very important for the mixing in transporting heat from the equator to the poles. All this is is some big shot trying to play with god. This will cause damage to our planet that might not ever be fixed. I thought we where trying to fix our planet? Because all this will do is kill things with this crap! In one more thing is if this hurricane did weaken(Because of a eyewall replacement cycle or just cold water)This creep would be up in down! I been hearing about this low life for about 3 years now. This is why I don't go to Go pbi!

Assuming success is possible, it seems that if the energy in a hurricane were suppressed at one place in time, it would re-emerge at another place in time. I'm not sure how that might manifest, but given the law of unintended consequences, it might be undesirable. One suppressed hurricane might not be significant, but if this behavior became routine, it might destabilize the systems that keep the atmosphere in balance.
