Is missing the eye a GOOD thing? It means there is NO break in the storm for even long enough to let your ears pop.

*NOTES*

Eye is only 10 miles wide.

Eye has come as close as it's going to get.

The winds are at their most intense now..... Southern half of island is seeing Hurricane force gusts for the next 12 hours.

Northern part of the island is not as strong.

Lucky thing we have had .... eye has stayed south of us..... <YAY!!!!!!>

Thanks Allen!

Yes...it is good because they won't get the HIGHEST winds..the winds are bad but much better nonstop less strong winds then the highest wind with a break..actually that break can snap the tree's and slap houses hard on the other side of the eye wall..it's a big WHOOOSH of high wind from the opposite direction it just came from.

Bottom of the hour newscast.

The county is bleeding at this hour....

Intense winds....

Please be calm...

Do not lose your faith....

Now listening to the wind...

Another 5-6 hours...
As adults we must be calm...
Do not go outside...
Stay away from windows...
Winds are increasing...

Houses are collapsing as we speak...

Small eye: 10-mile across....

Winds are at the most intense?
Not going to taper...

Hurricane force winds for next 24-hours

Lucky: Eye to the south, not going cross island.

Communication difficult...

Let us ride us out together.

This hurricane will not break us.

We have life and hope.

Caller: Not true that hospital has no food...
No Red Cross???

(More to come)

Hard to believe that with conditions as bad as they are, it would be A LOT worse had the eye crossed the island. Many people there will never know how lucky they really are. Let's hope Cuba will get a similar break...though this doesn't seem probable at this point :(

Gonna add to that explaination..think of it this way...bend a soda pop can tab one way and the metel connection creases right? but bend it one way and then the other and it breaks......

Alan says that Ivan stayed about 30 miles out and has turned wsw. It does not look at thought it is going to "cross" the island.

Does anyone know what the actual winds are in Kingston or other areas - the worst hit places are right now?

Folks I'm listening with you and while the news is incredible its to be expected. Jamaica just had a close encounter with a borderline CAT 5 hurricane.

Interview with Allen, apparently a met, I didn't catch where he's from. Eye of Ivan current 35 miles south of Spanish Town and moving at 11 mph to the W or WSW. Three hours ago it was south the eye was south of Kingston. He expects the eye to be south of Black River at daybreak and winds to begin to diminish at about 1PM. Hurricane force winds extend out 60 miles. I think he said that the south side of the island was currently experiencing 75 mph sustained winds with higher gusts, and the north side of the island experiencing hurricane force gusts. He noted that it is a positive that the eye and the CAT4-5 winds appear as though they will not cross they island.
