Is it set in stone that the hurricane force winds extend 35m from the center? It seems that should be more of a variable. (I am pretty close in Jacksonville and don't want any false hope that I am not in the inner wind field!!)

Those wind radii on the MARINE advisories are for offshore use only. They do not apply to land areas. The wind radii will be reduced significantly when a storm moves inland. This is due to the roughness of the terrain interrupting the generally laminar flow that prevails offshore.

Is that close enough to cause storm surge in Tampa Bay.

Hey, Skeetobite, one small improvement I suggest is that you put a small scale in one lower corner. I'd like, for instance, to be able to eyeball how far it is off the coast and then determine how far it is. Right now I'm just guessing. These maps are great, keep up the good work.

I like your maps simple and direct. Wish I had known about your site before but i do now. We used them in our EOC today and gave you credit.

Great map, made me nervous enough to stock up on supplies today as this would be an almost direct hit on us.

You're doing good work here (and I figure if we don't need these supplies, we'll donate them to folks who do or save them for the next go-round).

I liked the wind fields and the street level that you had before (the first image). While it might not be exact, it gave an idea and much more detail for exact locations and neighborhoods. That is what people want to know. How close is it likely to come to MY house and my neighborhood.

Please go back to the more detailed maps...please!!!

Gulf,

I haven't decided yet. We're going to wait until Monday to decide. We are buying plywood today just in case and are going to cut them to fit and pre-drill holes. We think that then, if we need to put them up on Monday, we'll have a much easier go of it. At least we'll have them if we need them. I've heard Tally is running out of plywood. My husband is running down to Lowe's this morning to buy some. If we can't get it here, we may drive up to Thomasville and buy it there. When is your hubby coming home?

The problem with evacuating is knowing where to go.

I think we're far enough from the coast that we may stay put since we've heard that alot of the hotel rooms in GA are already full since people stayed put from Frances. Many of our neighbors have already decided to leave, though.

I'm hoping my work will let us be off on Tuesday, at a minimum, so we can leave if we need to...but at this point, we're not planning to go unless the storm is projected to be a 4 or 5.

Catz,

My husband came home last night, and at Home Depot now with son-in-law and son. I'm seriously thinking of getting reservations at Callaway Gardens. It's only 2 1/2 hours from here. The men said they'll stay home, and my daughter and I and grandkids could head up that way.

I think I may try to get some reservations in Alabama somewhere today, and if it looks bad on Monday, we'll go. But right now, it's predicted to make landfall as a 2 or 3, not a 4 or 5. We had two trees taken down today that had cankers on them, the rest look pretty good. That is my main concern (The trees around our house). The MEOW models on NHC show that we wouldn't get more than 100 mph winds up here even if it was a Cat 5 moving alot faster than it is now.

At present, with it's present speed, I think we'd be okay. The problems with evacuating from here (we're like 70 miles from the coast, maybe 80) is finding a safer place to go. Even if we evacuated, we risk tornadoes, etc., and might even find ourselves in a more dangerous situation.

We are boarding up and securing stuff, though, and having those two trees down is a bit of a relief (we still have others, but those were a real threat).
