with the amount of web traffic that currently exists in the world today...and much of it being focused on this present storm...i see that many servers are being overwhelmed..
1. storm 2k
2. radio jamaica
3. midatlantic wx
etc.
i was wondering how those involved in emergency operations can remain in contact....do they have dedicated servers for themselves to bypass the traffic?...do they use sat phones?...other wireless means?
i'm just an inquisitive person and when i tried to link to the radio jamaica site this came to mind
anyone have any ideas?

Look at sites like google and yahoo that handle millions of request per hour....
It is very easy to obtain a server that can server static content that is cached to thousands if not more... per hour.
I have a server that i host a couple websites on, and dynamic content for my weather station, among video, and audio... and it handles hundred of users simultaneously.
All it takes is a smart eye toward your software engineering and deployment, hardware purchasing, and setup. The server farm i am located at is VERY well connected... thus it has no bandwidth problems.
Mission critical stuff, and servers are restricted if not fully, then at least partially in content to prevent overload. Thus allowing those that need it full reliable access.

of those websites the reasons they have problems....
s2k.... dynamic database driven content... the database is having trouble not the server.
radio.... it is not the radio causing the problem, because it streams one broadcast that all the people listen in to... however the rest of the content on the site, and the site having to load that content first prior to letting people acces the radio... that is why its having trouble...
weatherwx... It also runs off of synamic database driven web engineering... thus the database presents a restriction on the traffic, and user volume.
The key is design and implimentation of a fast lean, and simple website... ESPECIALLY if you are expecting a large amount of users accessing your site.
Its all in the intelligent design of the site, and planning in the hardware.
Cheap little 450mhz computers can server 10,000 website's a minute... as long as the content is not very dynamic... you have to be smart how you build it, and possibly build a low bandwidth version for use durring high volume times like this...
