Bit confused and a serious question.

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Bit confused and a serious question.

#1 Postby krisj » Thu Sep 09, 2004 9:15 am

I've been watching Ivan and the models and forcast tracks like the rest of you all. It looks like unfortunately FL will be hit again. It also looks like SC may get some more rain/wind from the after effects.
Now, as I mentioned earlier in another post, this morning on the news, the local met was very casual about Ivan. SHe said it existed, was a Cat. 5 and would hit the mainland somewhere. But didn't even really focus on the track much at all. When Frances and Charley were coming they spent so much more time saying it was going here or there and we looked okay or not.
In a way I don't know whether to be nervous or not be worried at all. I just think it is strange that a local met would be so not worried about a Cat 5, especially when it looks that even though we probably won't get hit directly, we could see more rain, etc. Are they hiding something? Are they SO sure it will go off in a completely different direction that we will have a sunny dry week next week?
The models are shifting here and there, but they look to me like we may get more effects than from Frances or even Charley which did come here as a Cat 1 as a second landfall.
SOrry for rambling, I guess I am trying to figure this who local met scenario and if I can go out and enjoy our first sunny days in awhile or prepare for more rain and flooding next week.
*I am not -removed-, so please don't say that. I am honestly curious about the different attitude with this morning's weather report. It was just...strange.*

There won't be the same kind of deep trough to carry Ivan in the direction Charley went, so unless the GFS solution is right (unlikely IMHO) whatever remnants there are will likely pass well west of you.

Honestly, my best answer to that is call them and ask them why they are so casual about it. If I had to guess, I would say they are waiting till the track is more "set in stone" before they really start telling you(I presume in the Carolinas)who are currently "less in harms way" than others might be(at the moment!)what they think it will do. Why they would not be at least alluding to the possibility of your area getting, at a minimum, after effects from Ivan escapes me. I am "tilting at windmills" to answer this in case it isn't obvious!

This will be our first sunny (sometime) weekend in a month, Kris! Go out and play, and forget about Ivan til you've got a good sunburn!

Okay, Not really. Use sunblock.

And keeping on eye on Ivan is probably best... but try not to stress about it too much! We've got THIS weekend off from tropical weather at least! (And the tourists are gone)
