Hard for me to tell.

Are there any sites that explain the ERC? I would like to read more about how it occurs, why it occurs, etc.

I don't think so. The convection around the eye has certainly weakened some, but the eye itself still looks tight and stable and perfectly symmetrical in the latest loops as of 9am AST.

On the flip side, one improvement from last night is that the eye is more clearly defined and round. When it was a strong category 5 the eye wasn't as pronounced on the IR.

No, not yet. However, one should be occuring shortly. The warming of the clouds you see near the center is most likely due to the cooler SSTs where it is now. If it hadn't been for that I can assure you the hurricane would have strengthened some more and possibly reached higher wind speeds.

I expect this will be its peak for now and it should come down to a category 4 storm later today....Still a POWERFUL storm.
