This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

How is the GAS/FOOD situation in Florida?

#1 Postby charleston_hugo_veteran » Thu Sep 09, 2004 5:39 am

I know people will start re-stocking very soon! Are there things to get in case of another evac?

There is little or no gas and hardly any food.

There is also no plywood or generators. Grocery stores are not restocking in full due to heavy losses and fear of more loss.

#5 Postby charleston_hugo_veteran » Thu Sep 09, 2004 5:47 am

S.C. is sending down truck loads of food, supplies, clothes etc.. It is called " Operation Payback".

They are headed to Daytona beach, so those in that area keep an eye out....

Hardly non-sense. Went grocery shopping yesterday at Publix only to find the freezer, meat and dairy section 75%+plus wiped out.

I asked our local store why we were not getting the groceries, They said that it was due to so much loss in Charlie and Frances. They are not ordering it till the threat passes. I did just hear N Fort Myers HD has a shipment of plywood!

I think you need to clarify this statement. Different parts of the Peninsula have different problems. Overall I have found only minor difficulty in finding the staples, milk & bread but even they arrived at most stores by mid afternoon on Wed. There was no problem finding most food at all, or water in any store so far. Batteries are low, as is plywood, & other direct storm related supplies. Overall in St. Petersburg there has been little problem obtaining gasoline throughout the entire Francis ordeal. Most of the problem here with gasoline was the media reporting how short the supply was, in fact that was true but alarming people casued them to go out any buy gas even if they were going nowhere. Which is stupid but human nature. The gas shortages I have seen here are on main well traveled routes. Back off the beaten path just a little there has been no problem if the electricity stays on.

Different parts of Florida are in different stages of stress, but no one is starving due to the storms.

Take Care,
Mike

West Coast Pinellas in short supply of what you would guess - plywood, fasteners, generators (probably becasue we have close to 60,000 people still without power)....as for food and water, still ok...gas, still ok.....but check back at 5p after all the locals have gotten wind of the latest forecast...

Here in Palm Beach County, it is dependent upon who has power. With at least 60% still without, finding gasoline is sporadic, but getting much better quickly. Grocery stores have limited dairy and no meats from central county to the north. Some of the problem is also due to curfews, but those have been lifting the past 24 hours. Went to Lowe's and HD in NOrth Palm Beach yesterday - no wood, few other supplies like batteries, etc.

hopefully caneman and rjgator can make it down to dade and broward where things are apparently much better than where they live.

N.Dade, Miami Lakes: Gas no problem. My Winn-Dixie is low on milk, eggs, water and bread. I found bread at CVS pharmacy. That was Tuesday. Things could be better now? HOWEVER, we could have a major shortage on essentials real soon if this new current forecast becomes consistant!!!

Dupre transport continues to bring fuel to Orlando and Ft Lauderdale this morning. We're doing our part.

Brevard is doing better now. We were able to get meat, dairy and gasoline for the first time yesterday. Most of us have been living on the hurricane supplies pending new deliveries of food. I saw generators for sale yesterday and Home Depot was slammed. Tarps are hard to get, but they can be found.

The big impact here is that Port Canaveral filled with sand and now the cruise and supply ships cannot come into port. This costs the economy a million a day in lost tourisim, plus it hampers all kinds of shipping. The cruise terminals are damaged as well.

Pinellas County and contrary to MPH says it was difficult to find gas for the first couple of days but that got much better since yesterday.

South Brevard, as of yesterday afternoon, still has little fuel. We passed 6 gas stations with NO gas. Many places still no electricity. Many trees still on power lines.

Grocery shopping brought home very little from our local Publix due to the meat, dairy and freezer sections being EMPTY!

I asked the clerk if they at least gave the food to employees while it was still at a safe temperature. She said, "no," due to a fear of lawsuits if somebody got sick.

I think I am going to be sick after seeing this morning's projections!

I know not everyone has access to Sam's Club or Costco or whatever membership stores are around. But they are EXTREMELY handy in times like this. With the exception of TP and garbage bags, it's pretty much the only time we use them!

I'm on Ft Myers Beach, and really have had no problem finding supplies yesterday and topped my gas tank off, with Medium Grade Unleaded....Bought water, bread, and meat.....not much, just don't want to have to throw it all out again, the meat that is.

Everyone, I've encountered, though, is very, very down.........we are all storm weary.......we don't want Ivan, don't need him, and definitely don't wish him on anyone else :(

Good luck to all of you and just remember be prepared, and 3 days worth of 'stuff' is NOT enough......without water, power for a week, you must have enough to last......
