If this is not a CAT 5 then what is?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

If this is not a CAT 5 then what is?

#1 Postby andrew_the_beast » Wed Sep 08, 2004 9:45 pm

This has to be a CAT 5. There has to be winds above 175 just by looking at this. Im sorry but when and where this makes landfall it will be a real disaster. Im still sticking with my prediction and saying that this is going towards Florida. IVAN is in its own environment now and the ONLY thing that will stop it is LAND.

No, it's a category 4 with winds of 145mph. Recon wouldn't lie.

Judging by the satellite appearance in the past few frames, it looks like a 7.0 storm on the Dvorak scale. Very well could be a Cat 5 right now if pressure has continued to drop.

menacing yet beautiful in its symmetry from a purely meteorological standpoint.

If you look at DVORAK BD IR shots, the cloud tops aren't quite as cold as a typical Category 5; they're cold, mind you, but not typical of Mitch, Isabel, the various WPAC Cat 5, etc.

Is it possible that we have a new pilot who has not yet developed a nose for the highest sustained winds?

There is a team of people on the Recon flights - the pilot flies where the techs and meteorologists tell them. There is someone who drops the sonde through the chute at the most prefereable time for eyewall/eye penetration. A lot of finding a max wind has to do w/ chance...sometimes they'll happen to go through a max, others they may miss it a bit.
