I have a crazy question

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

I have a crazy question

#1 Postby banshee » Wed Sep 08, 2004 8:36 pm

As insane as this may sound I do have a legit question and could someone please give me some sort of explaination.

Someone was talking at work the other day and commented they were watching a show on discovery which made reference to 'poles shifting' and thats why we're having such an active hurricane season.

I tried a google but the first two pages were mostly conspiracy theory sites and I'm too tired to be side tracked with babblings and ramblings of chemtrails and aleins by people who wear tin foil on their heads to block satellite signals. (I did find a site once with people who honestly did this)

So, is there any scientific evidence of pole shifting?

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. What are the chances of two storm forming way down south and still being a hurricane??

Joe Bastardi said we are just returning to the kinds of active seasons that were around in the 40s,'50s and '60s

I've read similar articles referencing a pole shift that is leading us to the next ice age.... http://www.iceagenow.com

I'm not sure if there is any credibility to this - would love to hear what the pros think...

I don't have time to go into this, but yes, the poles have shifted before and they will at some point in the future. This does have effects on climate, but we don't know a lot about it and it will be very difficult to forecast. I'll try to find some sources later. But for now, yes the poles can shift. They aren't right now and that has nothing to do with this hurricane season. :)

Pole reversals have happened before. Here is a website that explains a little more about the phenomenon. Doesn't say anything about the impact on weather/climate, but is interesting reading at any rate.

It's just a lucky night at the casino for mother nature, IMO.

Actuallty the poles are shifting ever so slowly, but they are shifting. I don't know the funky effects they have, but everyone knows they as we speak moving real slowly..

I'm a Florida native ( yes, there are a few of us) and I recall draging the mattresses into the center hallway on numerous occasions during the 60's and 70's... During the 80's I moved around a bit - and always seemed to move into the path of at least one every summer.

I think it has simply been a quite period and we are swinging back to an active period.

Keep in mind... our recorded history is really quite brief in the grand sceme of things.

shifting magnetic poles

#11 Postby tideline » Wed Sep 08, 2004 9:00 pm

if you look at any nautical chart there is a compass rose on it . the rose shows the magnetic deviation for the area covered by the chart. a chart from 20 years ago shows a deviation of 6 degs. now its a little over 7 degs. from true north. every place on the globe has a different reading because the magnetic pole and true north are not the same. all that said thank goodness for gps!

Note that pole shift discussion from legitmate scientists refers to MAGNETIC POLES SWITCHING!

This does not mean the earth literally flips upside down. The magnetic field weakens, then you have MULTIPLE poles scattered around the earth, then you have a N pole where the S pole was (magnetic poles, that is) and the flip is finished.

This has happened HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of times in the history of the Earth.

THere's some speculation it may happen again over the next few hundred years based on some weakening of the earth's magnetic field.

ANY sites you find talking about the GEOGRAPHIC poles of the earth shifting is a kook science site operated by a moron.
