Florid West Coasters --- post possible place to evac!
If in fact, Ivan does take aim at the West Coast of Florida, where in the heck would we go?

IF you were to leave now, Texas: I'm not joking, with the entire state at risk, nowhere in Florida is really safe-haven. Supplies are low and take a look at the entire south-eastenn US...Alabama, Ga, Va...you name it...tornados, floods, refugees. No, Texas is one of the few places that *probably* will not be at risk....better make that N. Texas...but not too close to Oklahoma...they have tornadoes...big onestracyswfla wrote:If in fact, Ivan does take aim at the West Coast of Florida, where in the heck would we go?

Tracy - As I too live in Ft. Myers - I have the same question and concerns. The current track and discussions on the boards - seem to
think we *might* get another hit - I hope that they are wrong.
Still - concern is the utmost on all our minds right now. We await
each report and hope for a change.
Yet another storm to prepare for is very hard.

Alabama would be a safe place around Montgomery north to Birmingham about a 9 hour trip on a good traffic day. Georgia near Macon to Atlanta are safe. Valdosta GA too. MS/LA are very flood prone. Best bets are AL and GA to evacuate. I lived in AL for 21 years, never flooded like it does here in Tampa where I live now. Even during the after effects of canes.

Wherever you decide, I recommend if at all possible you do it as soon as possible. Fortunately, the hurricane may not hit your area. Unfortunately, it still may, and I think evacuation under the current conditions would be extraordinarily difficult once it gets to the 'mandatory evacuation' time.
Recall that Frances wasn't really really heading in toward landfall till the weekend, and the Orlando airport closed at noon Friday.
Leaving now by air is probably best/easiest (check Southwest and http://www.flysong.com for possible decent last-minute fares).

We saw some Frances evacuees up here on Monday. They were from North Florida and were up at our area park with lake. I'm between Montgomery, AL and Atlanta, GA. They said hotels were booked until they got way up here.

I hear Spirit Air has flights from Ft. Myers to Atlantic City that are very reasonable.
I went to Miami for Charley and was fine, I might do the same for Ivan if it tracks into the Gulf. I know with Ivan, Miami would likely get more weather than it did for Charley (we had none) but at least I think I'd be safer there than here if it follows the same path as it did for that storm.

Ivan is still low-tracking. See if he swings west of us and into the Gulf...
His current track is a disaster for us. Evacuation is problematic because a powerful storm will rain out and blow hard over any of the evacuation routes. Still, that is better than 15 feet of surge and guaranteed death...
