If they're getting messages out by cell phone, then the damage may be overstated. If they are actually using satelite phones, then damage could be as bad as reported.
Reasoning:
Cell phones are rarely more than 50 miles apart and built on towers and the towers are taller if they are further apart. This would indicate less structural damage. Also, they tie into land lines to complete the call so those structures would have to be intact.
Satalite phones, on the otherhand, would link up directly to satalites which would not be affected by hurricane damage.

My concern is the same as it was yesterday morning. I think you're too quick with him. You start him off at an average speed over the first 24 hours of 14.8 knots, when his motion between 5pm yesterday and 8am today averaged 13.85 knots.
A slower motion means he's not as far west when he encounters the weakness.

You posts show how little you know about the islands and maybe even how little you know about hurricanes.
First of all, good buildings in the islands are actually constructed better than buildings in the states. we build out of concrete not wood for the most part.
second of all, a strong hurricane 3 when experiencing the eye wall can flatten anything.
I saw it twist steel girders here like they were tinker toys
third of all, there are , of course,other structures on most of the islands that are not as well built and are built out of wood. There are low income people who live in simple wooden structures. Also much of Grenada is what you would call rural. The town is hardly a city.
Grenada also has tall trees and I believe most of those trees are down and have flattened many buildings.
and fourth, I have a sneaky feeling that perhaps the Grenadians did not secure their buildings as well as they could.
We here in St Maarten know the drill and have it down pat and have all the supplies ( like plywood) we need whenever a hurricane threatens. Grenada does not get hurricanes very often and I am sure they were toally unprepared for Ivan unfortunately.

while listening to the local radio station there yesterday, you could hear the wind just howling and things going "bump in the night", (actually late afternoon). They were taking calls from folks about roofs "leaving", trees coming down, debris everywhere. Wow, what a humbling experience. I felt so helpless listening to them and not being able to do anything to help. Anyone know where to send a check?

I live in Ohio but have loved ones in Boca Raton. I have been very concerned for their safety in the the last few weeks. I was a gestational surrogate mother for a couple down there. I had boy/girl twins for them that will be 5 in December. We are very close and vacation together often. They are like extended family. Needless to say I have been dealing with anxiety often.
Based on everything I have been seeing, Ivan is now moving in a NW direction and looks very possible if not probable in the 5 day to affect southern Florida though I would guess west coast and not east. Even still, as big as he is now , regardless of where he comes ashore ( IF it is in Florida ), your state will be affected from west to east in a major way. I would start preparing for the worst and hope for the best.

Standard caveat: Way too early to say for sure.
My inclination is still that this is a GOM storm (Louisiana or points east to the FL panhandle) but I'm sure not taking down any more shutters until it's past.

This forum seems to sometimes take on a negative tone based on people not tinking others care about the loss of life and property.
The picture is amazign b/c Ivan tracked exactly to put the worst end of the wall right on top of Grenada.
That is both an amazing weather event as well as terribly tragic for all those within its path of destruction.
It IS posible to be both amazed and astounded by the force of mother nature and to also feel great sympathy and regret for all those who were hurt and the misery they have and will endure due to this terrible tragedy.
It IS possible to recognize both at the same time. I understand the raised emotions here, but I think we should try to keep somewhat in control when we post comments.
Just my opinion.

Grenada Support
ok, just an idea...is there anyway we could set up some kind of fund to help the people of Grenada...ive seen some posts about people wanting to send moeny or send wahtever they can to help...is there some way we could set up a fund that we could all donate to that Storm2k as a whole could send off to some organization that is helping the Grenada people...it could be from "Storm2k forum members support"...just an idea...
