I think ULL is starting

#1 Postby mobilebay » Wed Sep 08, 2004 2:51 am

to put some shear on Ivan. Look at the latest floater. Thunderstorm are starting to erode on the Southwest side. also, there is hardly any outflow there. In fact thunderstorms are starting to develop to the west of Ivan, as Ivan and the ULL interact.

I'm a very, very basic learner here and this is probably a stupid question, but since I don't know the answer I'll ask it anyway....what is meant by "the ULL"?

A upper level low pressure area...It forms in the upper Atmosphere which is a cold core/Extratropical kind of system. They normally are 700 millibars or above(200 to 700). Cool fact is that most of the time they form on the northwest side of a surface low. They also sprend jets maxs on there southeastern/northern sides. Which can also help the outflow in a tropical cyclone or if affected by the "shear" can also distroy or stop development of tropcial cyclones.

The low pressure of a hurricane has the strongest low pressure closest to the surface. With weaker low pressure as you go up. Intill you get into the upper levels of the tropical cyclone. Then you have a upper level high.

A surface low or cold core low is not stacked like a tropical cyclone. They lean on there side with the upper level low normally on the northwest side of the surface low/Extratropical-depression(Europe).

Outflow jet is what forms on the southeast side/Quad of the jet...They can help a tropical cyclone/or distroy one.

Would somebody mind explaining the floaters to me? What they are, where, and how they work? I noticed a post last week that someone was waiting for Ivan to get near the floaters, and wondered what that meant. Thanks!
