Who was the guy who said nothing would happen in the Carolinas from Frances?

What was his name?

It's right on the tip of my tongue...

:grrr:

We have had 3 here in my county (Hoke, NC) tonight. The air blowing is so warm. I am sitting here with my window open and the breeze is strange. One minute it is so still that nothing moves then we get these bursts of warm air. This is not your average stormy summer night. We are "under the gun" until 1:00 AM. This is not a good thing for me either as I am terribly afraid of tornadoes.

I'm in Hartsville, SC and these things have been landing all around us all day. The kids in school practically stayed in the hallways all day. Had several land within a half mile of my house.

Scary stuff.

I was the SKYWARN spotter that reported the Shaw AFB tornado from the parking lot of the 9th Air Force/US Central Command Air Forces HQ building. It was a bit sporty yelling at the airmen to get into the building while talking via radio to the warning coord met up in Columbia, with the vortex about 400 yds away. I've been a SKYWARN spotter for over 10 years now, most of that time spent in the South, with five tropical systems under my belt. Never  have I seen such a shear environment. One layer of broken scud at 1500 ft or so AGL going north; 1000 ft above another layer going east, with the vertical updraft visibly condensing right before your eyes all over the place. Every cell that comes through has a good deal of rotation and it's no wonder we've had this many tornadoes. Fortunately these aren't classical mesocyclones or supercells -- most have been short-lived and relatively weak. Despite trees/power lines down and damage to the golf course and housing area, we didn't have any casualties, thank God. It was sad to see oak trees that weathered Hugo (which virtually flattened Shaw) fall before what I think will be categorized as an F1 tornado.

We're fortunate to have sirens and people that will heed them.

Sadly, most of our rural areas aren't so fortunate, a lot of people live in mobile homes (or as we say here to keep the dealers happy "manufactured housing"), we take hits during the pre-dawn hours, and there's no affordable way to do sirens. Shame we can't get SAME-encoded wx radios out everywhere...

Can't wait to see what Wednesday will bring... the flood outlook for the mountains, particularly Asheville, NC, is dismaying. Those of you in the Ohio watershed may be in for a rough go of it.
