Of the storms so far, which do you think will be retired...?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Of the storms so far, which do you think will be retired...?

#1 Postby Canelaw99 » Tue Sep 07, 2004 6:32 pm

So far in this busy season, we've had:
Alex
Bonnie
Charley
Danielle
Earl
Frances
Gaston
Hermine
Ivan

Of those, which storm names, if any, do you think will be retired this year???

My opinion: Charley & Frances, definitely.....Ivan, probably....

Charley (Cat 4) , Frances (deadly rainmaker and slow mover), potentially Ivan.

We already know Frances will never be used again. Charely for sure...no idea if Ivan will be a major at landfall.

Charley ... definitely ...
Frances, ... irregardless ... (but definitely for memorable and damaging storms)

Ivan has all the potential in the world to make the "Hall of Infamy"

I say none of the above.
If we retire too many names, we'll run out and be stuck with really dorky names.

Looks like unanimously the storms that will be retired as of Tuesday, September 7th are Charley, Frances (even if the storm was a 50 mph Tropical Storm that moved out to sea at 55°W) and potential Ivan.

Names can be used again after at least 10 years have elapsed.

Whenever a hurricane has had a major impact, any country affected by the storm can request that the name of the hurricane be “retired” by agreement of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Retiring a name actually means that it cannot be reused for at least 10 years, to facilitate historic references, legal actions, insurance claim activities, etc. and avoid public confusion with another storm of the same name. If that happens, a like gender name is selected in English, Spanish or French for Atlantic Storms.

? Does a cat 4 or 5 (especially 5) have to make landfall as such before being retired?

Doubt it. The reason is it wasn't a big killer and didn't cause too much damage. If we retire every 100 mph hurricane, we will run out of names.

I don't know. I've wondered that myself. My thinking is no, unless it hits a boat or something.

Ivan already has made landfall as a major hurricane. Are we forgetting what just happened 3 hours ago?

Charley and Frances (obviously)
Ivan possibly?? We shall see!
Gaston?? Probably not but caused such a problem with flooding to Richmond like Allison did to Houston.
