Can we please do something about the flaming?

#1 Postby seahawkjd » Tue Sep 07, 2004 5:15 pm

I'm sorry, but I'm really getting tired of people posing legitamate questions and getting flamed. Questions, not forcasts but questions. I don't even feel comfortable posting on this board anymore because I feel like if I post something that questions the standard quo I'm going to get 2 pages of responses calling me a wish caster, calling me crazy, or suggesting that I am under the influence of a mind altering substance. I felt like this is a legitamate topic because of the post earlier mentioning it and warning everyone. I may be wrong but I don't think its gotten much better if at all. If I'm wrong please tell me because I took a 4 day trip and just got back, but really, what can we do to keep this board a place where people come to learn?

I agree whole heartedly!

This board is quickly turning into a gathering of kids calling eachother names for the littlest trivialities they can find.

When Frances was sitting off the coast there were threads 2-3 pages long flaming anyone that claimed it might go somewhere other then Florida. It went there and I'm glad that people had such a good handle on it, but its not exactly a condusive environment to achieve what this board is for according to its mission statement.

We're trying our best to monitor the threads but we can't possibly read every post. We have deleted or edited them as necessary. Please report the posts in question to a moderator and we'll deal with them as need be. I have read a few posts of some people calling others people I disagree with for asking questions and it needs to stop now! I've replied to no avail. We want and will have an environment where everyone feels comfortable asking questions. Those who berate other members will be dealt with.

I agree and I think the mods do a great job. I would just hope that people might get a grip on things and make it easier for the moderators to do their job. I'm sure with all the posts in the last 2 weeks they've got to be overwhelmed.

i think people have begun to just randomly call people people I disagree with and stuff just because its like the thing to do..haha....ive seen very good QUESTIONS asked and people call them people I disagree with..
i guess you could sum it up like this
in america...we are innocent until proven guilty
in some other places you are guitly until proven innocent
it seems things around here are "sarcastic and wishcaster until proven serious" instead of "serious until proven sarcastic"...if you know what im saying....people are just assuming everyone is just joking around on here when most are very serious in the questions they ask..even if htey are simple and maybe stupid to others

Mature people should be able to recognize legit questions from the trollers by now. It's not rocket science. Trollers should be simply ignored ~~ that is the only effective way of dealing with that. Some people here are on edge because of the trolls from last week making rather outrageous declarations that Frances was going to hit the Carolinas. Instead of ignoring the individuals, people allowed themselves to be baited.

The hardest thing to do on a message board is to resist the temptation of troll baiting.

I saw your question and it was legit. No need to get too sensitive about it ~~ just let the wise guys float on by...

Not really...
Over a year ago when i joined this board i could converse, and ask freely, recieving good feedback. However lately it appears at least that many of the members have the attitudes of little children, if they are in fact adults.

Ok will do. This place is like an addiction to me, I check it constantly and I just want to see it stay such an awesome place for information and education. I've learned almost everything I know about storms from this board.

Its not that I'm that worried about people flaming my questions, though like I said I am hesitant to post sometimes just because I don't feel like reading through a page of flames just to find a legitimate attempt to answer me. But I woudl be concerned about people just seeing this place as hostile and leaving before they get to know it.

A lot of posters just ket po'd about the repetitive questions, that happen over and over, about why or where a storm will go.

One thing...good folks like Chad who are usually around and can help with these things do not have power right now...and if you notice most of the flaming is coming from the new contingent of folks who may be more familiar with how other message boards work but not necessarily this one.

Speaking as a newbie here, I don't find this place particularly hostile at all. Yes, there are some unnecessary attacks, but in general I see a lot of respect being shown here, even when there's a difference of opinion.
The few times I've asked a question (even the one where I wondered whether a nuke could disrupt a hurricane), I've received thoughtful and informative responses. Maybe it's just because I'm such a likeable guy.
But seriously, this is a great forum, and if some people seem a little edgy perhaps it's because they just got hammered twice by a hurricane.

People like you are the #1 reason I complain about the repetitive and frivolous posts.

It is important, if not critical. that newbies like yourself get the facts about a storm's strength and where it is going.

A newbie should not have to wade through 3 to 4 pages of posts and try to decipher which info is the best.

The best way I know how to curb this is to have Mods use more Sticky's and try to corral some of the same threads into one thread we all can read and respond to.

So with Ivan's track changing day to day, let us all try to Keep It Short and Simple, as my writing professors used to say. Stick to the facts.

Do it for the newbies.

The only problem with the stickies TLHR is that if we have too many of them, all of the new posts will begin on the second page. Also, there are way too many topics to decide which one to sticky and which not to.

THAT being said, earlier in the season we did have a post or two requesting that people look to see if there is another thread similar to one you are about to start. That should help to cut down some what and also cut down on repetitive threads.
