the prospect of a smallish hurricane possibly crossing western Cuba got me thinking about Camille. And how it doesn't really matter how strong it is now or even around Cuba- Camille wasn't very strong then. With the right conditions, any hurricance can quickly become a monster at this time of year.
Here's an interesting story about Camille:

Yes, there was one of those ABC made-for-TV "movie of the week" turkeys made back in the mid 70's. It was very loosely based on Camille, and done in the "Airport" /Irwin Allen disaster movie style that was popular at the time. I vaguely recall that Larry Hagman was in it and so was the guy who played Sgt. Carter on the old "Gomer Pyle" show. I remember that the storyline revolved around both the Hurricane Hunters doing recon, and on the ground, the prerequisite wise protagonist who's trying to convince a Gulf Coast resort town that a killer storm is coming...and of course, nobody wants to take him seriously, 'cause "hey, it's a holiday weekend!" Also had doomed characters who laugh the prophet of doom guy off and throw a bang-up hurricane party at their swingin' 70's singles apartment complex (sound vaguely familiar?...Richelieu Apartments?) only to meet their maker as the winds howl and the massive storm surge engulfs them all.weatherfsu wrote:Isn't there a movie about Camille? I remember when I was younger watching a movie about a severe hurricane, and I believe it was about Camille.
