CDC says "Tape your windows."
Did a bit of looking around at hurricane prep info and stumbled onto the CDC (Center for Disease Control) web site. It states that you should put plywood over your windows, or if that is not available to put tape on your windows to prevent flying glass. I thought I read on another web site (run by a government agency, I think) that you should never tape your windows (just a waste of time and tape), and they were trying to stop the myth that tape does anything.
I think everyone would agree that plywood is the best solution, but for your neighbors in a bind, should you offer them that spare roll of masking tape you have in your closet?

It would be better to lend them some money to go by plywood or aluminum shutters.
Tape does nothing but leave an extremely gooey mess to deal with AFTER the storm has passed. Don't do it!!

It WILL help keep glass from flying *when* your window breaks. It won't make your window any stronger, it will leave a gooey mess if you have to clean it up later from unbroken glass-
But- if you don't have plywood and you're terrified of flying glass shards- tape can make the shards fall more neatly.
It won't keep your roof on your house- or prevent the glass from breaking- but it will help with the shards.

The replies were what I was expecting, which is why I was wondering why the CDC was putting this info on their website? I have plywood shutters for my windows, so I am not going to be using any tape. Of course maybe CDC should not be giving out hurricane prep info, but as long as they are, maybe someone should correct them.

Not to bring politics into this, but I wish that all of these "agencies" would focus on their specific purpose and not what another agency is responsible for. Perhaps more will get accomplished.
