Steady near 50 kt w/ gusts to 71 right now. These have been steadily increasing all morning.

That must mean that FL won't get hit... Floyd decided to leave SC alone after all of those people were stranded on I-26!! Same thing. lol

I'm kind of glad my folks didn't evacuate, hate for them to get stuck on the road like that.

I can see it now...the experts at the NHC have large SE coast map on the wall and they are each given 3 darts...landfall will be...huh..here!!!

While it's silly to expect Jeb out there with a gas can (though I'd love to see that) I don't think it's silly to expect that an existing contingency plan be in effect if this were to happen. It can't be a huge surprise to anyone in state government that the evacuees would face this situation.

Gov. Bush tried to do a good thing by lifting the gas tax for the month of August. Everybody filled up Aug 31 before the tax went back into effect. Then we started to fill up Sept 1 because of the storm. That is hardly the Governor's fault!

More or less, yes. The real reason is the the NHC freely admits that it really has little confidence in its ability to predict intensity. Given that, it makes much more sense to err on the strong side, since erring on the weak side gets people killed.

the storm slowing down is a godsend! This storm is expected to hit very soon...they better come up with a solution and FAST!!

The fact is, because Florida is a long, narrow peninsula, there really is no "good" contingency plan. That's why EOC planners tell folks to prepare, prepare and prepare. Most of us will ride it out in homes, shelters, etc.

One thing I do have at all times, is my EOC Disaster Sticker on my windshield so I can get back in afterwards.

That was a real problem after Elena in '85 and one thing you'll want to do is get back to your home soon as possible.

Not blaming Jeb Bush at all, just posed a question "could" something possibly be done by the florida government or whomever can make some tough decisions to remedy this situation or has everything like gas strucks etc. been haulted due to the fact Hurricane Frances is on the approach.

12 hours before the rain bands hit I-95 here in Brevard. The only thing worse than being stuck on the interstate out of gas is to add in the deluge factor! How miserable!

The state doesn't stockpile supplies of gasoline for this kind of contingency. How could they?<P>Nor does it stockpile plywood, batteries, and bottled water.

Actually, they have a "wheel of fortune" with every coastal town from Miami to Wilmington on it.

This sounds like 1992 when we evacuated for Andrew on the upper Texas coast. Thousands of cars were backed up on the highway in southern Jefferson County for many hours. People were stuck in their cars when they heard on the radio that Andrew had turned toward Louisiana. The entire evacuation plan for this many people was disastrous. Nobody blamed our governor. We completely revised our plan and things went much smoother when we evacuated for Lili in 2002, which also turned and went to Louisiana.
