Everyone in FL needs to remember this will impact you!

Whether this goes into Florida in Miami or in Jax, the size of this storm and the radius of winds will impact a large swath and do tremendous damage throughout the state. Our repair crews are already stretched thin. When this storm goes through, it very well may impact the states to our north that have sent many crews to Fl to assist after Charley. They will be called back to help clean up their local mess. In other words, even if "only" a CAT 1 or 2 impact is felt in your area without a direct hit, it will take a long time to get things back to "normal" - longer than you would think, since "priority" will be given to necessary functions like emergency services and hospitals first, throughout the impacted areas. Areas hit hard by Charley will be affected more since they are already operating by band aids. Supplies will be stretched thin as well and stores will restock the hardest hit areas first. Everyone must prepare for a storm now no matter where you live in Florida, since supplies locally will quickly run out with the uncertainty of the path of Frances. As the path becomes finer tuned, many stores will start shifting their stocks to where they think they will be needed most.
After Andrew, here in TampaBay, we saw a huge influx in population as many had to relocate either temporarily or permanently. Many locals also assited in recovery efforts. We were lucky then and had minimal impact from Andrew. Seeing the possible paths right now, we may not be afforded the same "convenience" as then. All of Florida needs to prepare for big changes, whether they get hit or not. Stock up on necessities in case your "minor" outage may last for days instead of hours due to lack or repair crews. Make plans with yoru family members throughout the state in case you need to relocate or they do to your location. Have family members that you can contact outside of the state that can be your communication center to be sure everyone is ok when lines go down. -this helps greatly just to know everyone is safe after the storm, even if life is tough for a while.
Be prepared to help others soon. If you have an extra room that you are using for storage, clean it up. You may need it soon to host a friend who becomes displaced. After Andrew, there wasn't a hotel room free or anywhere to rent in the Tampa Bay area for months. Housing becomes critical.
The great news in all this? Once again, we will show the whole country just how generous, resourceful and strong we all are here in Florida. We will help our neighbors and ultimately rebuild no matter what happens.
Stay safe and prepare everyone. -and don't forget to breath and sleep no and then over the next few days. We are all going to need our strength very soon.

Wwe will see with frances

I have already made the 2000 mile r/t to help out my Kinfolk. 850$ to my sister 500$ to her 25 year old daughter 110$ to the 15 year old. Red cross handing out 1000$ credit cards to the most affected.
This is the charlotte county disaster.

FEMA has come thru. Bush cant afford to lose Florida like his daddy did after Andrew.

Excellent Info

#9 Postby TampaBayBee » Tue Aug 31, 2004 10:52 pm

Will make an early run to bulk up on supplies for the east coast FL refugees who will start arriving tomorrow. Expect to be affected by Frances here on the Tampa Bay coast in some fashion too.

Following our amazing near miss with Charley, loaded up the vehicle with most all of the hurricane supplies for donation. Have been replacing supplies for the past two weeks.

We are resourceful here in Florida. We take care of our neighbors, and ourselves.

He won't. He's actually gained support in the polls since Charley hit. :)

Yes, but where is the best place to go for the LEAST IMPACT! Ok you guys scaring the !@#$ outta me. My dh said last night that Jim Cantore said if you evacuate dont leave your county? Our two shelters here are a max of 5 miles fromt he coast (Jupiter) yet they are shelters. How safe are they? Barb

where to go?

#13 Postby birdwomn » Wed Sep 01, 2004 5:31 am

The reasons that they are telling you not to leave your county are multifacted. Bottom line is that they don't want too many people stuck on highways with no place to go. That is the worst possible scenario.

If you plan early, and reserve your hotel or other safe location (with friends or relatives, etc.) in advance, you are fine to go further away from your home. You have to decide what is safest and best for you and your family. As for where to go...you need to decide that for yourself, IMO.

Be aware that if you DO leave the area, it is possible you may not be able to get back into your area for days or weeks if the worst damage occurs. On the other hand, if you know your family can't handle weeks w/o power & water, then you may want to get far enough away to assure safety and come back to assess damage after the fact.

I hope this helps.
