Press Conference - approximate content

#2 Postby Canelaw99 » Tue Aug 31, 2004 3:56 pm

Frances passing 150 mi. N of PR - very, very powerful 'cane. Hunters been there this afternoon - continued to strengthen. Surface winds up to 140 mph - powerful cat. 4 on scale. What counts is where it makes landfall...need to treat like it will remain a major 'cane, or cat. 4. Need to remember Isabel last year was major storm. No reason we see that it will weaken. Showed couple of different models - the GFS pulling it up into Carolinas & the Naval - through Bahamas, across S. FL, into GOM. What they're looking at are some of the limitations. There are warnings up in Bahamas and Turks & Caicos, watches for other parts of Bahamas. Could easily be on either side of the cone by Fri. "Don't focus on a dot" says Max Mayfield. Main thing to point out is that we can't let S. FL off the hook yet...still have some models pulling it that way. Everyone from Carolinas to FL need to be attention at this time. If that ridge stays in place, it's a FL 'cane...if it moves, it can go up north. We are expecting it to make landfall as a major 'cane and will cause extreme danger & if not careful, could cause loss of life. Treat this with all respect that you can. Dust off your 'cane plans, be ready to go if your local agencies tell you to.
