Does the fujiwara effect exist in the Atlantic?

I was just wondering about this, because TD 8 and Gaston are pretty close to each other. Does this phenomenon exist in the Atlantic?

Absolutely! Its happened a few times.

Hurricanes Emmy and Frances(!) did it in 1976. The most recent I think were Hurricanes Humberto and Iris in 1995.

It exists anywhere where you have two vortices with the same direction of rotation in a fluid that get close enough (but not too close) to each other.
