The big one?

#1 Postby dhweather » Sat Aug 28, 2004 8:13 pm

Frances may indeed be the storm that has been called the worst-case scenario. The infamous "gloom and doom" situation.

If South Florida is targeted for a major cat 4/5, there is no way that
Miami/Dade County can evacuate in 48 hours. There will likely be people killed in their cars trying to evacuate because they left too late.
There will be people killed in their homes as they are destroyed from
hellish winds, rain, and storm surge.

I'm in Mississippi and stilll might see Frances too, but odds are, Florida will see her first.

I encourage all of you in Florida to pay VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to
Frances. In a few days, if it looks as if landfall will occur somewhere in
Florida, please listen to your local officials and do as they ask.

Don't take your own life out of your own hands!

This is not meant to be flippant, but I find it rather ironic that we were reading a very similar "worst-case scenario, "This could be the big one for TAMPA"" type message just over two weeks ago...

Thankfully Tampa was spared. And actually, it seems the evacuation went MUCH BETTER than many of us had feared (I'd read MANY times "It would be impossible to evacuate Pinellas Co. in time")

Hopefully Frances will spare Miami and EVERYONE and turn out to be a fish. But if Miami continues to be in the forecast path, I hope and pray many folks in Miami will learn from Charley, (and the lessons of Floyd in 1999) and that SE Florida will show they can evacuate and prepare well to save thousands of lives.

I dont see this as gloom and doom except for damages. If it tracks similar to the 1926 hurricane it will certainly cause upwards 80 billion in damages. But South Floridians are not that stupid. I gaurentee that if this thing is still pegged to hit between the Keys and say Melbourne come Monday...thos folks will get out. It isnt like with Floyd where they were all evacuating but thinking it will turn. Once the news outlets say, "this will be worse than andrew, and it will not turn" the people will leave.

Urm, if this happens I guarantee mass chaos. JMO.

Remember the media hype and the Charley/Tampa miss. I bet the media will be very careful with how they handle this, especially in South Florida. Thankfully, the media outlets here are VERY calm at this point, as they should be.

If they say it will be worse than Andrew, there would be huge panic. Everyone would try and evacuate at once.

i probably shouldnt have said it like that...I would hope media outlets put it a little more gracefully...somthing along the lines of, "this storm has the potential to hit at the same strength as Andrew and it is not likely to curve." Basically the same message (if you live in SFL bend over and kiss you A** goodbye)...that was just a joke by the way

OT: If you get a chance, listen to comedian Ron White's album
Drunk In Public. "It's not that the wind is blowing, its what the
wind is blowing"
