Is it a record to have 3 majors in a month?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Is it a record to have 3 majors in a month?

Those historians of hurricanes out there share this information with us because I am with the impression that this is a record.

But what I am sure is that never in past hurricanes seasons going back centuries having 3 major canes before the peak of the season in september 10th has never happened.

Im sure it must be a record. Its 3 majors in actually 23 days, since ALEX attained major status on Aug 4th.

Never say never, Cycloneye...

I can tell you one that comes to mind...1950. Who can forget that year? 8 bonafide major hurricanes. I'm sure there were other years with 3 major hurricanes or more before the peak in September. Still though, an impressive feat for sure...

Maybe a record for August, probably not for September though.

1996 saw 3 majors in September (Fran was an August storm but September major, Hortense and Isidore).
1981 saw 3 September majors (Floyd, Harvey, and Irene)
1964 saw 3, again (Dora, Ethel, and Hilda, though Hilda attained major on October 1 at 06Z, is that still September?)
1961 saw 4 in September (Betsy, Carla, Debbie, and Esther)
1955 saw 3 Septembers (Hilda, Ione, and Janet)
1953 saw 4 in September (Carol, Dolly, Edna, and Florence)
1951 didn't see 3 in the same month, but it saw 5 prior to the peak of September 10th
1950 saw 3 Augusts (aww...) (Able, Baker, and Charlie)
1933 saw 3 Septembers (11, 12, and 13)
1926 saw 3 majors prior to the September 10th peak, as well as 3 Septembers (4,6, and 8
1916 saw 3 majors prior to the September 10th peak
1893 saw 3 Augusts (3, 4, and 6 according to the revised Hurdat)
1886 saw 3 Augusts (5, 6, and 7)
3 years had 3 majors in August

Happy to give it. I was suprised that there were no Octobers with 3, but I guess it makes sense. I wonder if much will change when Hurdat gets done the next set of years...

I wonder how many major hurricanes will have occured by the end of the season. Interesting to note that so far this year only one of the 4 hurricanes we have had did not reach CAT 3+ status. Looks like nature made up for the quiet early season.

I'm sure it will change quite a bit. There should be records broken/tied from these revisions. I can tell you one for example...1995's tropical storm Gabrielle will most likely be revised as a hurricane. If so, then 1995 will tie with 1969 for the highest number of hurricanes in a season (12). Of course, that is if they don't find any more storms that can qualify as hurricanes in 1969...
