Is Charley headed for retirement..?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Is Charley headed for retirement..?

#1 Postby Josephine96 » Tue Aug 24, 2004 1:48 pm

This is probably a stupid question.. but is Hurricane Charley destined for retirement..

25 deaths and being the 2nd costliest hurricane on record seems to be a shoe in..

Makes me wonder what name they'd come up with in 2010 lol..

defintely,

wait... the UN makes that call and we all know how they screw everything up, including saying Gordon's 1,000+ deaths wasn't enough for retirement

Yes. For good reason.

And so is Frances for no good reason. Some stupid thing about offending the French, LOL.

Haven't seen the new names yet.

I hope he gets retired.. only because then I can say that of the 2 hurricanes I've seen direct hits from.. 1 of them is now retired lol..

Plus the damage even here makes it look like he'd better be retired..

If Charley isn't retired then there are several names that were retired that shouldn't have been. Plain and simple.

Whenever a hurricane has had a major impact, any country affected by the storm can request that the name of the hurricane be "retired" by agreement of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Retiring a name actually means that it cannot be reused for at least 10 years, to facilitate historic references, legal actions, insurance claim activities, etc. and avoid public confusion with another storm of the same name. If that happens, a like gender name is selected in English, Spanish or French for Atlantic Storms.

I dont know for sure, but I dont think that's an arm of the UN. (Corrections welcome)
