A repeat of 1980's freezes?

#1 Postby FLGuest » Tue Aug 17, 2004 4:50 pm

I hope all the farmers can replace their damaged groves.... Orange groves are great simple of Florida, and the sad thing is, many of them are fast becoming housing developments, or cookie cutter mobile home tracts..... The 1980s freezes were devastating to farmers and to my family we lost our 50 acre grove..... I hope Charley does not have the same affect.....

It's not looking good for the grove owners. My relative in Wauchula lives across the road from a grove and her yard was littered with golfball size green oranges.

Reports started coming in yesterday on significant damage to both groves and dairy farms. When I was a kid, there were groves and dairy farms everywhere. Most of the groves I see now are not working groves -- I'm sure there are more about to suffer the same fate.

I am worried about the freeze happening here as well... We have been getting cold fronts actually making it through all the way to the gulf coast, and making a noticeable difference in the temps! All I can think of is if we are getting cold fronts in August, whats going to happen this winter?
