a question...
these videos are insane! i have a few questions..
how are their trucks staying upright and not getting blown away like so many seen in aftermath footage? are they loading the vehicles down with extra weight, positioning them a certain way, or just hoping the odds are with them? also, how often does the hurricane hunting community suffer fatalitites?
if information is being gathered that can lead to improved prediction, then i can understand taking the risk. but if it's just for the adrenaline and to experience the power of the storm, i'd be looking for a safer hobby after charley.

We do position the cars a certain way so that the winds come over the structure we are next to and then move around the building as the winds shift.
We were located at the county court house building that was new. It had a brick walk way wide enough for us to pull the cars in during the worst. Then as the winds shifted during the eye passage we slightly shifted east in the walk way so that winds again we not directly on us.
We would of liked more time to find our base camp for the storm but Charley rushed us at the last minute...and I mean minutes. We were in South Sarasota and once we saw the NE turn was a true track we blasted south on 41 into Punta Gorda. Once there we had a hard time finding a location to setup. Jim Edds went on foot near the pink condos seen lately in alot of CNN live shots. We went searching for our safe zone and spotted the court house area. We all agreed this was the area we would setup.
After the storm we reviewed the area including our building and notice that the court house had little damage besides some windows and siding along the trim gone. All the AC units on the roof were now in the parking lot, but it was the best looking structure left in town. whew!
There was some small damage to the some of the cars from flying glass and siding. Only one chaser I know has severe damage to his car, but at this time I can't release the photos until insurance is taken care of.
