They were prepared with a generator, too, so they have some sort of normalcy. That's all I know for now as communications are still sporadic at best.

I've spoke to my mom three times since the storm. They are on a canal 4 blocks from the harbor.

Here is what I posted on accboards.com:

My parents own a new home that was built in Port Charlotte just 4 years ago. They live on a sailboat canal just 4 blocks from Charlotte Harbor. They also decided to stay but that is only because it was supposed to hit Tampa and was only supposed to be a minimal cat 3 hurricane. No one predicted that this thing would become a cat 4 storm. That cost everyone.

My parent's house suffered at least $30 K in damage as someone's roof went through their master bedroom. They also have a 40 ft catamaran sailboat that had a 50 ft mast. The mast was ripped from the boat. They had a 500 lb fountain knocked into three pieces.

They are doing as well as can be expected. My mom rode her bike around the neighborhood this morning and just started crying because of all the damage. Most houses down there are destroyed. Even the tied down boats are destroyed. It looks like their sailboat is totaled afterall. So now that damage estimate is creeping towards $100,000, but they have insurance.

The winds were so strong that they flung a bird into a screen on my parent's house, decapitating the bird.

Mike, I will try to contact my mom tonight when she goes to work at a nursing home in Port Charlotte. She is an RN there. They will not have power back in that area for a long time. Words can not describe the destruction my mom told me she has seen so far.

Let's just say it brought tears to my eyes and I'm not there.

I finally got some news! I havent been able to speak with them personally, but I have heard from another relative that they are all fine! And beyond all hope I hear that their trailers are in ok condition. They suffered damage to the porches and the car ports are gone but the homes themselves survived! It's amazing considereing they were only 200 yards from the bay that separates Port Charlotte from Punta Gorda. Many of the homes in they park were not so lucky. It will still be days before I can talk to them myself but at least I know they are safe. Thanks so much for all your kind thoughts and prayers! You all helped me a great deal during this stressful time and I can't thank you enough. I truly hope the rest you are seeking info on family and friends hear from them soon.

Once again, I'm sorry about posting that message that you may or may not have seen last night. I was short on nerves still at that point and disturbed that people rode out the storm in mobile homes.

Very good news, Mike. I just talked to my mom and found out that most of Harorview Rd and the mobile home parks there are completely destroyed so it is a miracle tha they suffered such minimal damage.

MainMike, My brother lives in St, James City on Pine Island. We have not heard from him yet. My daughter in New Orleans got a Pine Island Phone Book off the internet and started calling every number and finally reached a lady at Two Fish Inn on the island. The connection was very very bad. This wonderful lady drove to my brother's address and spoke with his neighbors who said that he had been home and she had just missed him. It took about 8 hours to get a phone line back to us and we could hardly hear her, but this was a comfort to us. Remember people there are taking care of each other. And we will be able to go there soon ourselves. I also have a sister in Port Charlotte, she lost her roof and all trees. I will ask her to try and find out something for you also.

I have friends in Arcadia. They lost a roof on an out building and some trees, but for the most part, apart from that, they are fine

Maine Mike. I appreciate your concerns. We rode up to Punta Gorda today because we could not communicate with a 90 old family friend. We found him sitting in his beat up golf course condo. Bewildered, and hot, but alive and well. It is bad up there and a big problem is no communications. Nobody can call out with cells or land lines. I could not get my cell to funtion until I was 10 miles south of the area. Your relatives are probably ok, but unless they can drive to Northport or Ft. Myers, they will not be able to communicate with you for awhile. Hope this helps.
