Can hurricanes do loops?

I know that sounds stupid, but has it ever happened? Is it possible?

Elena in 1985 did...and I'm sure there are others that have.

One did in the open atlantic in 2002 or 2003, don't remember the name

Absolutely. Some have done more than one loop before in recent history. Last year TD 14 did TWO loops in the open Atlantic.

I remember seeing canes do that. It is possible.

Hurricane Alberto in 2000 did the biggest loop since records estimate. It took 5 days for Alberto to make it.

Ah yes, Elena, it's gonna SMACK MISSISSIPPI, no a trough is taking it East to Florida, no the trough outran Elena, so she came bac to Mississippi, that was a fun one!

God, I'm going to sound old!! Hurricane Betsy in 1965 did a loop in the Atlantic off of the east coast then came back around the southern tip of Florida and nailed Louisiana.

Loops are not at all rare for Tropical Cyclones. Frequently they occur when a storm is in a binary interaction with another (Fujiwhara effect) and other times when the storm misses a trough or actually travels all of the way around a subtropical High cell (Ginger, 1970).

Another 2-looping hurricane, everyone I think remembers this long hurricane.

Yup... ive come to the conclusion that Hurricanes are the King of Loops.

If Loops were an Olympic event, and if Hurricanes could enter that competition, Hurricanes would win every time.

I remember the NHC getting rather goofy in the advisories about Kyle when it became clear that it wasn't going to be a dangerous storm.

Hurricane Juan (1985)...pretzel-shaped loops with THREE landfalls in Louisiana...

I think Betsy in 1965 also made a loop right around Florida and then hit the Keys I think.

Tropical cyclones make more loops than baroclinic low pressure systems. I have never heard the latter making such loops.

Yes, Betsy did a small loop in 1965. I don't have the track in front of me, but it was headed up the eastern seaboard, east of Georgia I think, slowed, looped, and then headed south/southwest/west across southern Florida and then west-northwest/northwest to Louisiana.
