Should Charley be retired?????

#1 Postby Wnghs2007 » Sat Aug 14, 2004 12:33 am

I was wondering what yall thought. With all the severe damaged it caused and if it verifies all the deaths at those 3 hospitals that were Annihilated. Probably over $200 million dollars in damage at least. I know I am making an early assumption on cost but that is what it in my mind at least caused. So what do yall think. Should it be retired. And not to mention what it might do to were ever it MIGHT make landfall next.

I don't only think I know it will be. A very strong upper Cat 4 not only hits but plows across Florida...yep we'll never see his name listed again.

$200 million? Closer to $20 BILLION, if you ask me. Will easily surpass Hugo in damage based on what has happened, and there is more to come. This is a no brainer for retirement.

I don't think the question is whether Charley will be retired, it's whether Charley will surpass Andrew in terms of damage...It could cause problems all the way up to NYC...

I was just not wanting to go to over board yet until the sun rises tommorow to see what has happend. I dont want to say to much and then there is nothing. But your estimate seems pretty reasonable to me, may;be a little on the low side even. But who knows.

I am with you on this one. Being in the adjuster field for 15 years and seeing some of the damage I would guess it is going to be that high.

No damage assessments out of Sanibel yet either. Conflicting stories of casualties too. I guess we will not know until daylight. From what I keep hearing and reading, Punta Gorda is totally devastated!

No doubt Charley will be retired. If anyone votes no, it's a joke. 8-)

I know, I know... everyone has been talking about it. I really think we all should send emails to the NHC toward the end of the season requesting Clyde to be the replacement name. We (the US) should be able to swing a Bonnie and Clyde on the same list if France can get rid of Frances for no real reason.

It will be used again when a "male C name" is needed. Gloria, Bob and Andrew will have to return at some point.

No it won't...those storm names will NEVER be used again since they are retired by the NHC...There are many "male C names" available for them to use...

Chad
Clay(ton)
Cliff
Clint
Clyde
Cody
Colin
Corey
Craig
Curtis

I doubt the WMO will choose Clyde. I think Chad, Clint, Clayton all seem likely. Hurricane Clayton has a nice ring to it. :)

You're probably right. As for a replacement name, remember that other languages are in the running as well. Spanish, Dutch, French, and German names are just part of the other languages that a name can come from.

Hurricane Carlos?!

Well, usually when a French name is retired, it's replaced with a French name. Georges-Gaston.

Same with Spanish. Cesar-Cristobal.

It's something I heard over the years, that other may of, too.

There technically isn't an infinite amount of names with all letters of the alphabet to make it that easy to never run out.
