I drove down there 1.5 hours after the eye of the storm passed.
On I-75 it looks like a lawn mower ran over the trees.
There were 4 Semi Trucks with trailers flipped over on the highway within 500 feet of each other, near the Punta Gorda Exit.
In Punta Gorda, complete devastation. Power lines down everywhere, homes destroyed, extremely hard to drive through the streets. I should not have been there but I couldn't go on without knowing what Sarasota missed. I didn't see too much flooding but I didnt go too close to the shore. Route 41 buildings down there are pretty much devastated.
I made a video of the trip, I will encode it, if someone has 200-300 meg to spare and lots of b/w let me know and I can post it.
The Bridge over the Harbor seems ok. The homes that you can see from the Harbor were under water. Keep in mind I was there around 6:30pm.
Debris everywhere... Saw insulation from homes, roof tiles, shingles, and glass on i-75.
Saw a firestation which got its roof completely torn off. (off i-75).
There NO EMERGENCY crews out yet. By the time i left (7:30) I started seeing a few state troopers out there.
Sign were not only pulled outa the ground, they were twisted, bent, and it looked like they were simply heated and melted/molted into weird shapes. I can't imagine what kind of winds can do that.
If this thing hit Sarasota or Tampa Area..... Wow... I wouldnt even want to think about it.

my sister lived in pt charlotte
on Marion, a block from the destoyed hospital
http://www.newscoast.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage
check that site for amazing coverage.
The fog of weather keeps the death toll from being found out.
My sister, who sold the house twoweeks ago, had settlement scheduled for tuesday.
Her house has no roof.
She is a refugee tonight.
At least, thank god, all her family survived.
and that fact makes the property loss neglgible

They are talking right now of numerous bodies/fatalities in the Port Charlotte area on http://www.nbc-2.com. Most of Port Charlotte is destroyed apparently. Widespread destruction in the area. Very sad.
