Quick question. I know that often times especially when hurricanes are in the process of making landfall, NHC's website has trouble. But for the past couple hours NHC website is unacessable. Do they always do this or is it just a temporary glitch?

They are having trouble with their "repeaters" echoing the statements from their primary source site in Silver Springs MD. It is probably a technical problem not related to the storm or volume of traffic.

It's pretty typical. I've advocated for NOAA to enter into a server/bandwidth sharing agreement with other divisions of government for times like this. After all, it is the official info that people are SUPPOSED TO TRUST. When that same information is largely unavailable at the time when it is most needed, it's just bad policy.

Overall, the government has a vast amount of bandwidth, and very rarely do they ever come anywhere near overall capacity. While NOAA servers were inundated today, many other government servers were probably nearly idle. There definitely should be a system in place to ensure that pages are served promptly whenver a large-scale weather crisis is imminent.

It's about saving lives. That's what the NHC is supposed to do, but if their info isn't available, you can't say that the job is getting done.
