last night? GEEEEeeeezzz those people had no clue about preparation. People were asking if they should open all their windows, that since storm surge was 10 - 15 feet they should be safe since their home was 30 feet from a creek; which corner of the house should they board up?; if I leave my trailer and get in the shipping container, would that be safe?; since I don't live next to the water and no one is boarding up their windows, do I really need to board up?; the Tampa Bay Bucs' game is still scheduled for tommorrow night?!?
Employers were telling their employees they'd better show up for work?!?!?
Unreal. Their lack of experience with these storms is going to exacerbate the damage from this storm exponentially.

I had the same exact thought.
I listened last night and could not believe the questions. If those callers are in any way an accurate reperesentation of the planning done by the folks in Tampa then it will definelty be a contributing cause to the possible loss of life and property. It is understandable as they just haven't seen a serious storm in many years.

Loss of life
I have been watching some of the news coverage this morning. These poor people have no clue what they are about to experience. There are people in the flood zones who are not leaving. I don't think they understand what surge is and how quick it comes. God help them.

Some guy this morning lived on a bayfront house on piers and said he was going to sit it through since his piers were 16 feet above sea level and the estimates are for only a 10-15 foot storm surge.

Do not forget there will be battering wave action on top of those storm surge numbers. Well atleast for ocean front areas and other large bays etc. And never forget the power of 100mph+ winds for 1-3 hours near the point of landfall. Not one to wait out imo.

I'm a 3rd generation Floridian... I've noted that after new residents get over the shock of meeting the mutitude of palmetto bugs and lizards sharing our state, they express surprize at how severe are our afternoon storms. They become accoustom to them quickly though and often think a hurricane will simply be a very bad summer storm.

Unfortunately I think a lot of the populace on the Gulf coast of Florida has been lulled into a false sense of security by recent weaker systems, like Gabrielle and Harvey, and have no idea what a major 'cane can really do. The last close brush was by Elena in '85, and that didn't even make landfall. I pray for the best, but sadly I think there will be a larger loss of life than what's standard nowadays.
