Mandatory Mobile home ecav. is this good in ALL cases NO!okay may get slammed for this but I stayed in a "manufactured " home a D.W. in Georges 110mph 2 miles off the beach and lost only some singles and of course skirting...nearest storm shelter(school) lost its roof and half fooded! people had to relocate to another shelter! BOTTOM LINE evaluate you OWN situation ny home is still farly new (1998) and built for zone 3 winds(125mph) Just angers me for media to SAY all mobile or Mfg. homes need to leave!

I could be wrong, but it seems like the buildings that are used for "shelters" are really selected only because they are not located in an evacuation zone and could hold a certain number of people. Do they have any requirements on the structure itself? would love to hear from an expert or anyone involved in emergency operations on this .

slosh, that used to be the case. the standards for which the red cross would operate a shelter were raised within the last year or two (at least here in florida,) however.

i can't give you the specifics on the upgrades, but i can tell you that here in volusia county that until the shelters are up to code, the county has the responsibility for running the shelters until after the event, at which point the red cross is supposed to take over (as i understand it, anyway.) can't tell you how that will work in practice, as it's not come up yet. we may find out in a day or two.

btw, i'm not with the red cross, but i'm a minor muckity muck with the local amateur radio emergency communications group here. so take the above as you will.

btw, if you have new schools in your area, they are probably up to the standards that are required. i know they've been hustling trying to get everything up to date here, but there's alot of work to do.
