Downtown Tampa May Be Cut Early For Safety
TAMPA - Tampa Electric Co. said it may shut off power to downtown Tampa's central business district, Davis Islands and Harbor Island as early as Friday morning in anticipation of Hurricane Charley.
The utility company said the move would prevent underground equipment from being damaged by the storm and the accompanying floods. The company also said the move would let it restore power to customers as quickly as possible.
Tampa Electric could shut down power as soon as 10 a.m. Friday, if company officials decide it's necessary.
Local officials are urging employers in downtown Tampa to remain closed tomorrow, and to ask employees to stay home. More than 51,000 people work in downtown Tampa.

This is a good and safe precaution. I hope everyone in the area is prepared for the dark. Keep plenty of batteries handy---I live next to my NOAA radio during these events. It also is capable of picking up local TV stations when power goes out. Careful with the candles. You'll hear about plenty of fires and even some deaths because of fires caused by candles in these storms. Be wise and don't be one of these victims---and tell your neighbors, family, and friends to keep careful with the candles.

Apparently some of the power systems are underground and so if they leave it on it could damage it further. That is what I gathered. Let me know if I am wrong.
