Who are we to argue with the NHC?
I say they made the right call with Bonnie yesterday.

I've seen some hurricanes look alot worse than Bonnie.
I think she's doing a fine job hanging in there.

I am NOT going to Bust on TPC...
But my point is that if TPC adopted the 3 tier classification scheme as set up by Dr James Elsner's book HURRICANE OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC (publsihed in 2001) then I think this would help.

In the last 100 years under 11% of all BE and BI tropical cylones have reached Cat 3 status of higher... and in the last 100 years under 4% have made landfall as a cat 3 or higher.

Yet with TO systems -- TRUE tropical cyclones -- the ratio of of tropical cyclones making it to cat 3 or higher is MUCH higher ans is the % of cat 3 4 and 5 landfalling hurricanes

that's their job as a government agency. Overall, they do a pretty good job. Probably as good as anything that we have the tools for today. Recon found a closed warm core low which qualified for ts status based on the criteria.
